THE CITY OF PORTLAND MOVES CLOSER TO DEFINING OUR SITE
Assistant Manager Pat Finnegan has forwarded our information concerning the prospective site for mooring
the USS John F Kennedy. This deep water berth will put the JFK within 300 yards of the historic Old Port
area of Portland and within walking distance to all of downtown Portland and the eight million tourists
that the Greater Portland area draws every year.
NEW ADDITIONS TO THE BOARD
The USS John F Kennedy Museum is pleased to announce the addition of two individuals to our Board of Directors. Capt. William D. VanVoorhis and Capt. S.J.S. Dunbar. Bill is a past president of Portland's Propeller Club while
Sandy was the Portland Pilot who brought the JFK into Portland her first time in 1987. Both have extensive
knowledge of the waterfront and are well respected in the Portland community.
Julie Rabinowitz recently joined our group as a member of the Board. Ms Rabinowiz has extensive experience
in non-profit management including youth services, archives and museums, universities, and professional associations. She has worked in the archives of both the John F. Kennedy and Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Libraries and Museums, which are administered by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration.
On another front, we are currently engaged in negotiations with the City of Portland (all departments)
working to finalize language that will further our efforts to complete Phase II to bring the JFK to Portland.
The Portland Press Herald recently reported (4Jun10) that "Portland Officials... are pleased with
the decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency agreement to keep most of Portland Harbor
from being classified as a high-risk flood zone." This is great news for the City of Portland and for our
organization.
Kevin Kelley, spokesperson for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, was quoted as having said: "The (FEMA)
agreement has produced a new flood map that reflects actual risk, good science and effective collaboration."

KEEPING YOU IN THE LOOP
Check out the March edition of the Portland Monthly for an in-depth article on our organization.
We are happy to announce that we have received endorsements from the Maine Science Teachers Association
(MSTA) and the Portland Propeller Club here in Maine.
Last month a small group from our organization met with Jim Maravelias, a USS JFK veteran, who was
kind enough to be our guide on a tour of the ship at the inactive shipyard in Philadelphia. Upon inspection
of the Kennedy, we now know how to proceed with plans to develop her into a museum. Visit the
Photo Gallery to view some snapshots of the Kennedy.
We are also very pleased to announce that the USS JFK Association has decided to hold a reunion in
Portland, Maine in September of 2012! You can be sure that we're ALL looking forward to that event!
Thanks, Bob!
